Our Mission

The West Side Rowing Club is a non-profit organization run by volunteers whose purpose is the advancement of the physical, mental, and moral well being of the youth of the City of Buffalo, New York and surrounding communities by education, training, instruction, and participation in the art of rowing and other athletic pursuits.

West Siders in Olympic Finals

Steve Coppola and have advanced their United States Crews to the finals in the 2008 Olympic Games. The US Women’s 8 coached by Tom will be racing in the final at 5:10am and Steve will row for Olympic gold in the US Men’s 8 at 5:30am on Sunday August 17th (all times EST).

All are welcome to come and watch Buffalo’s rowing Olympians at the West Side Rowing Club on Sunday August 17th between 2:00pm-6:00pm. Join the family and friends of Olympic rower Steve Coppola and Olympic Women’s Rowing coach Tom Terhaar as we cheer on their crews in Beijing. We will be showing replays of the races on the hour starting at 2pm. Cost is $15 per person and food and drinks will be served.

West Side Crews Win 3 golds at the Canadian Henley

Three crews from West Side came home after a week of racing with gold medals from the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta. The Jr. B Women’s 8, consisting of Abby Giancola, Rachel Hirschbeck, Shannon McDonnell, Sage Green, Elizabeth Rutowski, Birttany Knasak, Kellie Solowski, Kitty (K-Town) Mahoney and Olympia Giouleskas won the 2000 meter race by 2.06 seconds over South Niagara Rowing Club and the rest of the field. This is the second year in a row that West Side has won this event.

On Friday, the Senior B Lightweight Men’s 4- defeated Kingston Rowing Club by 1.14 seconds to bring home the 2nd gold medal to West Side. Matt Rung, , Jim Thompson, and Newton Sears sprinted through the Kingston Crew in the final 20 strokes of the race to capture the gold.

The final gold medal of the weekend was won by the Senior B Lightweight Women’s 8. The crew of Alison Todd, Mallorie Reinecke, Danielle Carlino, Sarah Giancola, Liz LaLonde, Charlotte Lane, Kelsey Kean, Erin Wylie and Puja Sztorc crushed the rest of the field to win the 500-meter dash by 2.49 seconds.

Other notable finishes from the 126th Royal Canadian Henley include: Sr. B Women’s 8 (2nd), Senior Men’s 8 (2nd), Sr. B Lightweight Women’s 8 (2nd), Jr. B Men’s 8-B boat (3rd), Jr. B Men’s 4-A boat (3rd), Sr. B Lightweight Women’s 1x (3rd).
